Our History
A Legacy of Community Spirit
The Small Hall (1942)
During World War II, Buncrana's unique position near the border presented both challenges and opportunities. Forward-thinking community members recognized the potential of cross-border trade and social connections. The small hall was built as a gathering place where people from both sides of the border could meet, trade, and celebrate together safely. It quickly became a symbol of unity during uncertain times.
The Large Hall (1958)
The post-war economic boom and the golden age of big band music inspired the community to dream bigger. In 1958, construction began on the large hall to accommodate the era's popular big band performances and larger community events. The hall featured a specially designed sprung oak floor - perfect for dancing to the sounds of touring orchestras and local bands that defined the late 1950s social scene.
The Fire of 2019
Sunday night, 3 February 2019 - A devastating fire changed the course of The Plaza's history forever. What started as an ordinary winter evening became a pivotal moment that would test the strength and determination of our community.
The fire caused extensive damage to the interior of our beloved halls, destroying decades of memories and countless community treasures. Emergency services responded quickly, but the damage was significant enough to force a complete closure of the facility.
Rather than marking the end of our story, this tragedy became the catalyst for something greater. The fire united our community in an unprecedented way, with residents, local businesses, and supporters from across the region rallying together with a shared determination: The Plaza would rise again.
The rebuilding effort that followed wasn't just about restoring a building - it was about preserving the heart of our community and ensuring that future generations would have the same opportunities to gather, celebrate, and create lasting memories within these walls.
The Reopening
After years of dedicated fundraising, planning, and reconstruction, The Plaza officially reopened its doors to the community. The new facilities blend modern amenities with the heritage charm that has always defined this special place.
The reopening marked not just the restoration of a building, but the triumph of community spirit over adversity. From the ashes of 2019 emerged a stronger, more beautiful Plaza - ready to serve as the heart of Buncrana for generations to come.
Today, The Plaza Project stands proudly as a testament to what communities can achieve when they work together towards a shared vision.
